The Cornell Public Service Center is proud to announce that together with the
office of the associate provost for outreach, we will be reaching out to students
in Groton and Elmira school districts as part of the Upward Bound Program. The
program provides support for students preparing for postsecondary educational
endeavors. Upward Bound is designed to include academic support, counseling, tutoring,
cultural enrichment and mentoring opportunities for students.
Executive Director of the Public Service Center, Leonardo Vargas-Mendez said,
“I am thrilled with the opportunity to connect further with Groton and Elmira
school communities. We, at the Public Service Center, along with other departments
on campus have recognized for many years the importance of connecting with our
neighboring communities. Upward Bound provides us with substantial resources to
impact educational capacities in Groton and Elmira and help improve the achievement
gap challenging these communities."
He continued, “The Upward Bound proposal is
a collaborative project of Cornell University and the Elmira and Groton school
districts. We look forward to working with them over the next four years, and
are certain this partnership will have a tremendous effect on low-income youth’s
opportunities to pursue college educations.”
