Upward Bound Program Assistant

Description: The Program Assistant is responsible for providing day-to day supervision,
enforcement of program policies and rules, program support and evaluation during
the 6-week Summer Residential component. Primary responsibilities include, monitoring
and supervising an assigned group (12 max) of high school students, ages 13-16,
Monday-Friday for 6-weeks. The Program Assistant is responsible for ensuring a
safe,fun, and supportive learning environment that includes academic tutoring
and mentoring. The Program Assistant is expected to accompany their assigned group
to classes, lunch, and other scheduled activities throughout the day.
Hours: 39 hrs/wk; summer federal work study award required
Wage: $9.00/hr

Summer Program Instructors

Type of Positions: Composition and Literature Instructor & Mathematics and
Science Instructor
Description: The Upward Bound Instructor facilitates active and collaborative
learning in a specific discipline for 50 Upward Bound students entering the 9th
and 10th grades, during a 6-week residential summer program. Instructors will
be involved in developing creative and hands-on curriculum, assessing student
progress, and on-going evaluation. Instructors will have responsibilities outside
the classroom, requiring weekly meetings with Program Assistants and Upward Bound
Program Staff members. It also involved attending community meeting at least once
a week, leading and participating in a non-academic activitiy or student-interest
based elective, and interacting with students in non-academic environments. This
temporary 6-week position includes an additional three-day orientation that will
be to be determined. The summer program operates from June 29 to August 8, 2008,
with the following teaching schedules:
Composition and Literature, Mon-Fri @ 8am-12pm
Mathematics and Science, Mon-Fri @8am-12pm
Compensation: $3,000 stipend for the summer

Upward Bound Summer Elective Instructors

Description: The Upward Bound Elective Instructor facilitates active and collaborative
learning in a specific discipline for 50 Upward Bound students entering the 9th
and 10th grades, during a 60-week residential summer program. Elective Instructors
will be involved in developing creative and hands-on curriculum, assessing student
progress, and on-going evaluation. Outside of the classrooms: Recommend that Elective
Instructors attend community meetings, leading and participating in a non-academic
activity or student-interest based elective, and interacting with students in
non-academic environments. This temporary 6-week position includes an additional
three-day orientation taht will be to be determined. The summer program operates
from June 29 to August 8, 2008 with the following teaching schedules:
Electives - Mon and Wed 1-3pm; Tues and Thurs 1-3pm
Compensation: $1,000 stipend for the summer

Residential Community Advisor (RCA)
Department: Cornell Public Service Center
Description: The Live-In Upward Bound Residential Community Advisor (UBRCA) is
an important part of the Cornell Upward Bound Summer program for high schools'
students from Elmira City and Groton Central school districts. You are the "front
line" person who interacts with the high school students regularly, enforces policy
on the floor and in the hall, provides academic and tutoring support for these
high school students, mentors them on career and college decision, and is responsible
for establishing a community feeling within the residence hall.
Compensation: $1,200 for stipend, room and board are provided
