For sixteen years, Into the Streets has been introducing students to the local
community. The mission of ITS is to promote a lifetime commitment to service
amongst college students.
Since 1992, Into the Streets, a student-led program of the Cornell Public Service
Center, has sponsored and planned a fall day of service to provide hundreds of
Cornell students the opportunity to volunteer throughout the community.
Last year, the 16th Annual Day of Service turned out to be the largest day of
service in Cornell's history, registering over 1,200 volunteers to do service
on October 27, 2007. Into the Streets sent volunteers
to complete valuable and beneficial community work throughout Tompkins and surrounding
Counties. For the past two years, in 2005,
2006 and 2007, Mayor Carolyn Peterson proclaimed each day of service "Into the
Streets
Day" in the City of Ithaca.
Building on the past history of Into the Streets and the momentum of last year's
success, Into the Streets is currently planning its 17th annual day of service,
which will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2008. The kickoff ceremony and registration
will be held in Barton Hall on Cornell's campus.
