Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award

Each year since 1987, Campus Compact has recognized five undergraduate students (at Campus Compact member institutions), in honor of Howard R. Swearer, for their outstanding public service, and provides financial support toward their continued efforts to address societal needs. Five undergraduate students at Campus Compact member institutions receive awards of $1,500 each to support service programs of their design or choice.

Candidates for the award must demonstrate evidence of outstanding public service or success in creating an innovative approach to a social, educational, environmental, health, economic, or legal issue within the community. The student is one who connects service and academics, creates a sustainable project and links service with its larger social context through policy work and awareness raising.

Three Cornell students have been recognized through this award. Neil Giacobbi '96 was recognized in 1996 and Jamilla Cutliff '99 in 1998, and in 2002, Gary Schueller, '03.
