The annual symposium on service learning is a component of the Faculty Fellows-In-Service
(FFIS) program. Faculty teaching service-learning courses or leading civic professional
projects that have received funding from the FFIS committee are commissioned to
present their experiences at the faculty symposium.
The symposium presentations include different approaches to community
development through a variety of academic disciplines.
FFIS with the support of the Vice President of Student and Academic Services produces a publication entitled 'Working Paper Series' that features service-learning issues, models, and curricula to disseminate educational philosophy and pedagogy throughout campus and to provide faculty an opportunity to see the academic relevance of service-learning in research, teaching/learning, and professional service. Selected papers from the publication are commissioned to be presented at the annual symposium on service-learning at Cornell University.
The first symposium took place in 1997,
and corresponded with the publication of the first volume of the Working Paper
Series, entitled
New Directions: Teaching and Research.
