What is Upward Bound?

Upward Bound links colleges and universities with nearby school districts whose students meet federal income guidelines. The program brings high school students to the Cornell University campus over the summer for intensive learning with an emphasis on college preparation. The program continues throughout the school year with tutoring, counseling and educational enrichment.

The goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. It provides instruction in core academic subjects along with supportive services to high school students from low-income families and families in which parents do not have a college degree.

The U.S Department of Education provides funding for the Upward Bound Program through the federal TRIO initiative. Cornell University Upward Bound is one of 700 federally funded projects.

Our mission is to:

•    Encourage students to develop consistent patterns of analytical thinking

•    Seek learning for enjoyment and information

•    Expand students’ intellectual, cultural and social growth

•    Contribute to the development of a positive self-image and self-esteem

•    Familiarize students and parents with college selection, admission requirements and the financial aid process

•    Assist students with career exploration, provide an overview of the world of work, and prepare students for career decision-making

Who is eligible to participate?
Cornell Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor degree.

Eligible high school students must be currently and/or will be attending participating High Schools: Elmira Free Academy, Elmira Southside High School, Groton High School
