Application Process

Two faculty members, who are having a significant impact on undergraduate, professional, or graduate education at Cornell by involving their students in challenging service-learning programs, will be given a $5,000 award to enable them to further develop an ongoing community-based learning/research project, to initiate a new effort, or to seek institutionalization of a service-learning course.  

Nominees/applicants must be full-time Cornell faculty members and be able to demonstrate involvement in public scholarship in their nomination/application. 

Faculty members may apply on their own or be nominated.  Nomination and application materials must be submitted together by the Friday, March 30, 2012 deadline. 

Call for Applications

Completed applications should include:

  • A cover page including applicant name, title, department/affiliation, proposal title and abstract
  • A maximum 3-page proposal letter outlining what you intend to accomplish as a Kaplan Fellow. Your proposal may involve undertaking a service learning course enhancement, developing a new course proposal, or undertaking a community-based research or action research project. The proposal should document how your project engages the community by responding to a community need and involving community partners in aspects of its planning and implementation. Your proposal should demonstrate sustained ways that the project will impact, shape or enhance the service-learning teaching and/or research agenda of your department.
  • A copy of the faculty nominee's vitae emphasizing evidence of engagement with service learning pedagogy or public scholarship
  • An end-of-project evaluation report emphasizing curricular and community impacts. 


Application must be received by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 30, 2012.
