Encourage, Empower, and Engage
In President Skorton’s New Student Convocation Address on August 18th, 2007,
he spoke about the value of public service and community engagement. After discussing
the importance of the POST program, he ended his speech by saying:
“So welcome to Cornell: A caring community—inspiring and inclusive—where freedom
and responsibility go hand in hand, and where our tradition of looking outward
has a real impact on education, research and outreach, and on how Cornellians
engage the community and the world.”
The Public Service Center is fully committed to “engag[ing] the community and
the world” through a plethora of service projects and learning opportunities such
as student programs, classes and symposiums. Please join us for the 1st Annual
Service Learning Conference where students and faculty will share their Cornell
Service Learning experiences with you.
The main goals of this conference are:
1. To educate the Cornell community about Service-Learning initiatives through workshops, plenary sessions and key note speakers.
2. To engage more students who would not ordinarily be involved in service-learning projects by explaining how their efforts could affect themselves, their communities,
3. To recognize dedicated students and faculty who actively pursue and engage in service-learning projects and curricula
4. To encourage students, faculty, and members of the community to network with
each other and create better service oriented programming
